Desmond Monroe
Born in 1943, Desmond
has always had an interest in drawing and started painting in 1964. He attended art classes for several
years at Newtownabbey Technical College and has been a past Chairman of Glengormley and Carrickfergus
Art Clubs. Due to the high interest in his work he turned professional in 1993. He presently teaches
art at Downshire School, Carrickfergus, and gives demonstrations of painting at most local art clubs.
There is a calm and peace about Desmond's paintings and he has attained an uncanny ability to capture
the everchanging moods of our Irish landscape, whether in the Mournes, Connemara, Donegal or the Antrim
Coast.
Desmond has held the following exhibitions to date:
Gillen Gallery, Newtownards
Solo Ormonde Gallery, Belfast Solo Higgins Gallery, Belfast Solo Country Gallery,
Ballyclare Solo Comber Gallery, Comber Solo Arches Gallery, Belfast Solo Belfast
Castle Group Royal Ulster Academy Group
In 1995, Desmond
was among the Morton Newspaper Award winners in a province wide art competition. Some of his work is
in the private collections of Wiggans Teape and the Department of the Environment and his paintings can
be found in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the United States of America and Kenya.
