For Gavin, every  step  in the  process of crafting a painting, from conception to  signature is part of the creative experience. This interest stems from his scientific training in the laboratory as a biochemist. He often likes to mull the pigments and prepare his own mediums. When working in oils, he will often purify his own walnut and linseed oil and use thickening products to achieve the desired effect.
Gavin uses bright pigments to create illusion and to make the paintings appear to emit their own source of  light. His  skilful use of  the palette  knife, combined  with textured  paint ensures a seemingly effortless impasto effect.
